Successful people are simply those with success habits. - Brian Tracy
Professionals cultivate outstanding qualities and habits that differentiate them from other people in their company and industry. Whatever industry you are working in Nigeria, whether Human Resources, Banking, Consulting, Oil & Gas, Telecoms, etc, you are considered a professional and thus, your professional life should maintain good work habits that would enhance your productivity and efficiency on the job.
Perhaps you have read the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. Perhaps you haven’t. The lessons in this great book can help you become more effective and productive in your career life. In this series of posts, I’ll be discussing the 7 Habits of Highly Productive Nigerian Professionals that can help you become more productive and more efficient and drive your careers to the right path.
Habit #1 ~ Plan
Planning helps professionals get things done effectively and efficiently. Working with a daily plan gives you a stronger sense of purpose and an efficient way of doing things. If you work with deadlines, you should prepare a task list that shows the priority of tasks, so you can start from the most important tasks to the least important ones.
Daily Planning
Whether you plan your day the night before or in the morning, keep your mind on your goal to accomplish the various tasks, and your overall work quality and satisfaction will increase.
Here are a few tips to guide you in cultivating the habit of daily planning:
- Have a daily planner (e.g diary-form, PC, etc)
- Write down your daily tasks and how you would accomplish each of them
- Go through each of your daily tasks
- Make a note of all the tasks that should be done and when
- Stick to your scheduled tasks
- Check to see if some tasks should be adjusted and make a note of this
- Avoid compromising other tasks in your list
Weekly Planning
Plannning your week should not be much of a big deal, once you’ve mastered the professional habit of daily planning. In the same way you have planned your day, plan each day of the week from Monday to Friday (possibly Saturday, if you work) which should give you an overview of how the next five days would be.
Remember that some tasks may change in the course of the week. Thus, make it a point to make the adjustments necessary in your weekly planner. Of course, there are other aspects of planning were not discussed here. The main point is that when you cultivate the professional habit of planning, you will be more productive and efficient in your career life.
The 2nd Habit of Highly Productive Nigerian Professionals will be discussed next.
