Whether you’re just starting out in your professional career or you’ve already established yourself, but would like to improve yourself, this 3rd Habit of Highly Productive Nigerian Professionals will help you improve your intellectual ability in your careers.
So far, I’ve discussed two habits:
Habit #3 ~ Read
Professionals who desire to become more productive in their careers must form the habit of reading. The industry where you work is the best place to start. The more you know about your industry, the higher you’ll climb up the corporate ladder. Here are a few tips you can use:
- Make time to research how your company influences the entire industry you work; visit your company’s website (if any) regularly.
- Subscribe to Google email alerts on specific articles that concern your job and industry.
- Find and print online articles that relate to your job and file them for future references.
- Read blogs on careers advice such as blog.careersnigeria.com and subscribe to blog feeds that share career news and information related to your job and industry.
- Read magazines that can keep you up-to-date on the movers and shakers in your industry.
- Subscribe to international magazines such as TIME, Newsweek, BusinessWeek, The Economist, etc for the lastest company news and industry information around the world.
- Make out time to read these articles during lunch break, while commuting, and at other leisure times.
The more you read, the more awareness and knowledge you will gain about the industry and your company’s position. If you apply the knowledge you gain, your performance and productivity in your job will improve.
Blogging
Some professionals have found it very useful for their careers when they keep a log of their own thoughts on the industry where they work via a weblog. If you have the time at your disposal, you can create a blog where you write about your views and opinions about your industry, or your professional career life, or you can even try blogging or posting on a colleague’s blog.
Here are a few suggestions to guide you:
- Choose a blog platform such as Wordpress.com
- Write one or two posts per week depending on your time.
- Make comments on other people’s blogs that relate to your blog.
- Use your blog to build a web reputation for yourself in your career.
- Read blogging tips from Problogger.net
The 4th Habit of Highly Productive Nigerian Professionals will be discussed next.
