Whether you’re just starting out in your professional career or you’ve already established yourself, but would like to improve yourself, this 5th Habit of Highly Productive Nigerian Professionals will help you improve puntuality in your careers.
So far, I’ve discussed four habits:
Habit #5 ~ Punctuality
Punctuality is perhaps the most important professional habit to increase your productivity. I might be wrong, but in a world where ‘Time is Money’, every professional should be keen on being punctual at every aspect of his or her professional career.
Unfortunately, some Nigerian professionals are lagging behind because of the ‘time factor’ in Nigeria and this mental attitude has grown in us to the extent that we feel that being late is a normal thing - afterall, it goes with the system. Granted, the Nigerian situation makes it difficult for professionals to form the habit of punctuality, for example, with the inevitable traffic problems in major cities such as Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja.
But think about your reputation: the fact that you may be branded a ‘late comer’ at the office, or your lateness to work is affecting your productivity, or it may even give the impression that you are not serious with your job, and may result in the lose of your job/career. Shouldn’t these reasons motivate you to form the habit of punctuality?
10 Tips To Help You Improve Your Punctuality in Your Career
Being punctual doesn’t necessarily mean coming to work early. It also means being ready and arriving early for meetings, maintaining project deadlines, being on time for external appointments and more. Here are 10 successful tips to help you achieve these:
- Plan your day (if possible, your week) in advance.
- Organize your schedules for the day’s work and tasks.
- Maintain a morning routine before you leave for work.
- Practice arriving to work 10 minutes early for the next one week.
- Avoid things that would distract your attention when working on a project deadline.
- Put or pin reminder notes on your desk for meeting schedules.
- Commit yourself to doing the right things at the right time.
- Don’t be discouraged when other people are not punctual.
- Analyse your activities at the end of each week to find areas you need to improve.
- Celebrate your successes in being punctual and continue the process.
